Review of Tropic Thunder

This funny movie takes us on a harrowing trip through the jungle, a land of drug dealers and primadonna actors. The film's director, Steve Coogan, gets tips from his military adviser, who's also the author of Tropic Thunder, and drops the primadonna actors into the jungle. Things go terribly wrong for the crew, and the movie ends in a head-severing gag.

Among its many flaws, Tropic Thunder is also a satirical look at the movie-making process. Stiller, who has a history in filmmaking, doesn't shy away from shining a spotlight on the process, skewering self-absorbed actors and greedy studios. Although he's a great director, Tropic Thunder is darker than its trailer would suggest, the movie's tone is intelligent and funny. Downey is fantastic as a Hollywood Method actor, while Black's character is less memorable and has fewer opportunities to shine. Rapper Johnson and newcomer Baruchel also shine as diverse actors in the film.

Tropic Thunder mocks American film culture and the silliness of method actors. It also pokes fun at Hollywood's obsession with re-telling true stories. This movie goes over Vietnam War insensitivity and the ridiculous luxury of studio film shoots. It also skewers Hollywood's broken attitudes towards race, sexuality, and social justice. Ultimately, it's a hit or miss movie.

Despite its wacky title, Tropic Thunder is a well-made comedy film that understands the movie-making system. With its mix of dialogue and action, Tropic Thunder is a laugh riot that will keep you hysterical for days after watching it. I highly recommend watching it if you love summer movies!
